NEW NATIONAL STUDY EXAMINES HOLIDAY-RELATED INJURIES

Monday, April 05, 2010
A new study by the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital examined holiday-related injuries. Researchers examined 5.7 million holiday-related injuries sustained by children between 1997 and 2006 and found that although holiday activities like fireworks and pumpkin carving can be dangerous for kids, most injuries were caused by “everyday” household situations and sports activities. “Parents and care givers should be aware that holidays present not only a risk of holiday specific injuries but also more general, everyday injuries,” said Christy Collins, MA, senior research associate in the Center for Injury Research and Policy. “They should continue to be watchful for injury risks even in the excitement of a holiday celebration.”
